Lisbon

Culinary traditions and modern tastes

Lisbon has never been more modern than now. This picture of an ancient city has long since disappeared. For several years now, the Portuguese capital has been showing a new face, authentic and modern. As a result of these changes, you will now find unique museums, restaurants, hotels, shops, markets - all without losing the traditional Portuguese style.

The gastronomic scene in Lisbon has recently been renewed and culinary tourism here is extremely diverse. The taverns, local markets and pastry shops are still there, of course, but now they share space with a bunch of brand new restaurants with signature dishes and bold gourmet tourism offerings paired with fine Portuguese wines. Lisbon cuisine goes far beyond the triad of cod, sardines and pastel de nata. Expect to find recipes from around the country and the world, very well executed by young (and award-winning) chefs. At markets like Time Out Market and Campo de Ourique, you can get a wider view of what's happening in the city's gastronomic scene. But if you want to understand the essence of Portuguese cuisine, there is no other way: you will have to indulge in the delicious and welcoming traditional taverns known as tascas.
